DON JUAN NIEVALieutenant-Governor of the Subprovince of Marinduque, 1907–1916
Before he became the governor of Marinduque under the American administration, Juan Nieva was among the prominent Marinduqueños who participated in the delegation to Aguinaldo in 1899 during a time when the island's fate was being decided by the war between the Spanish and the Americans.
By 1907, Marinduque's position changed. It was no longer a separate province, it became a subprovince of Tayabas, and Juan Nieva became its Lieutenant-Governor.
From 1907 to 1916, he was one of the main administrators of the island during a time when Marinduque's fate was slowly changing—regarding government, communication, and economy.
And his term was not short.
1899 — part of the Marinduque delegation to Aguinaldo 1907 — became Lieutenant-Governor of Marinduque 1914 — confirmation of his appointment was recorded in the Official Gazette 1916 — his term ended 1920 — Marinduque became a full-fledged province againThere are also local historical accounts linking his time to projects such as telegraph communication and agricultural development, while a new family history accounts relate to the origin of the Gasan bridges that were completed in 1924, a claim that still needs to be proven in primary records.
But here's the more important question: How many Marinduqueños still know who Juan Nieva was?
A leader who was present during the revolution, the change of government, and the rebirth of Marinduque as its own province.
