Repeat of Filipino- American History Month Celebration Here at THD

The Biden-Harris Administration is proud to celebrate Filipino American History Month, October, 2024. Our Nation has been immeasurably enriched by the contributions of Filipinos and Filipino Americans who have shaped our history and continue to ensure the United States remains a land of hope and opportunity for all.
πŸ’Ÿ

Last year, THD celebrated Filipino-American History Month starting with my talk πŸ’Ÿabout the Philippines. This was followed by 5 Nights of Showing of Filipino Award- Winning Movies in our Cinema. The celebration was highlighted by a Filipino Special Dinner πŸ’œfeaturing chicken Adobo ( Philippine National dish) as well as Pork Sinigang πŸ’š. Pork Sinigang is rated as the #1 soup in the World by Taste Atlas this year.
I am reposting the websites below discussing the last year's celebration with the hope that our new Activity Director Kellie Schuyler will repeat the celebration of Filipino-American History Month here at THD.  The one-week of celebration last year did enhanced our sense of community belonging here at THD based on several comments from my THD blog readers.

It is worthy to note that Filipino-Americans have shaped US history and continue to ensure that it remains a land of hope and opportunity for All! Again, I am proud to be a Filipino- American. I came to the US in 1960 with a graduate student Visa and later became US citizens in 1972.

Here are the websites for last year Filipino-American History Month Celebration

Personal Note: I was told by my readers that reading my blogs have taught them a lot about Philippines History, Food, Culture and about Filipinos in General. So, I am happy to know that my blogs have not only inform, educate but also perhaps inspire someone once in a while. Thank you again, for your comments.

Why Women Live Longer Than Men

The demographics here at THD confirmed the fact that women live longer than men. Of the 121 residents as of this writing date, there are only 28 of the male gender here at THD. This is very evident during meal times as well as during Activity events. A good example is our Bridge Monday and Friday Games. I am the only Male out of the 7 Females Playing. The other day, I was having Dinner at the Comet Room. The three Tables for 6 were occupied by 17 women and me. I commented I feel outnumbered. However, one of my mahjong buddies boosted my ego that I have been surrounded by women all my life starting from my wife, two daughters and four grand daughters and I could handled very well surrounded by 17 women in a small room for at least one hour without damaging repercussions.  And I agree!

Older age death rates tend to be higher among men than womenThese differences are partly due to gender differences in health behaviors, such as smoking, alcohol, and drug use, and occupational risks, which tend to be more common in men and have growing consequences with age.

According to a Harvard University study, men tend to possess more muscle mass, so they can run faster and lift weights more easily than women, but they are also more likely to contract more diseases πŸ’šand have shorter lifespans. Testosterone?πŸ’š

As people grow older, death rates rise steeply from a range of diseases, including respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, infections, cancers, and autoimmune diseases. Men tend to have higher prevalence rates and death rates from many chronic conditions, which further contributes to the gap in life expectancy.

These differences are partly due to gender differences in health behaviors, such as smoking, alcohol, and drug use, and occupational risks, which tend to be more common in men and have growing consequences with age.

As before, in 2021, all countries are above the diagonal line, which means death rates are higher in men than women.

Mass for Lorenzo Ruiz at the Santa Maria Catholic Church in Orinda, CA

Yesterday, Sunday, October 6, I was invited by my next door neighbor, Dorothy MusseyπŸ’š, to attend mass and celebration of the feast day of Saint Lorenzo Ruiz at the Santa Maria Catholic Church in Orinda, Ca.  Dorothy mentioned a special choir of Filipino-American musicians will be singing at the mass. At the end of the mass there will be sala-salo of Pinoy Dishes.

Without hesitation an opportunity to attend mass in person and taste Pancit, and Lumpia again, I accepted the invitation with lots of excitement.  The afternoon of Mass and Pinoy Food exceeded my expectation. Another item that I did not expect was the news that Dorothy knows the Ibabao Family in OrindaπŸ’œ- our Compadre/Comare in the early 1980's when we were still Resident of Pinole, Ca. Dr Tino Ibabao passed away in 2021.  The Ibabaos were the witness/'sponsor of my late son confirmation, thus the term Compadre/Comare.

I took photos of the occasion as follows:

So who is Lorenzo Ruiz? -Here's what Wikipedia says:

Lorenzo Ruiz (Filipino: Lorenzo Ruiz ng Maynila; Chinese: ζŽζ¨‚倫; Spanish: Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila; November 28, 1594 – September 29, 1637), also called Saint Lorenzo of Manila, was a Filipino Catholic layman and a member of the Third Order of Saint Dominic. A Chinese Filipino, he became his country's protomartyr after his execution in Japan by the Tokugawa shogunate during its persecution of Japanese Christians in the 17th century. Lorenzo Ruiz is the patron saint of, among others, the Philippines and the Filipino people. He is the first Filipino Saint.

Lorenzo was canonised by Pope John Paul II on October 18, 1987, among the 16 Martyrs of Japan, making him the first Filipino saint. Ruiz' canonization was supported by a miracle in October 1983, when Cecilia Alegria Policarpio of Calinog, Iloilo, was cured of brain atrophy (hydrocephalus) at the age of two, after her family and supporters prayed to Lorenzo for his intercession. She was diagnosed with the condition shortly after birth and was treated at University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center.
Thank you Dorothy for the invitation and for an exhilarating/adventurous afternoon both in mind and spirit (mass) as well as body and my stomach ( Pancit and Lumpia). It is an experience I will always remember.  The Pancit and Lumpia reminded me of the hundreds of Salo-Salo I have attended prior to my move to THD. Besides the lumpia and Pancit, there was cassava cake and sticky rice cake (suman) for dessert.
πŸ’šDorothy just moved to THD about 3 weeks ago. She used to sing in the Choir at Santa Maria Church.   She is selling her house in Walnut Creek and have 4 offers today. Good Luck Dorothy in your House Sale and May your stay Here at THD a Happy One. Again welcome, Neighbor! I hope Batman and Robin do not bother you with their daily outings in our adjoining patio.

Forgotten and Ignored on Her 85th Birthday

Today is an appropriate day to post this story of an 85 year old mother forgotten by his 4 sons on her 85th birthday. Also today, 40 invitations to my 90th BD have been printed. Because of limited space in the ClubHouse Apartments ( venue of BD) of my Daughter Dinah, I am not too happy that I will only be able to invite 9 of my THD friends to my 90th BD celebration Lunch ( 12-4PM) on Saturday, December 21, 2024 in Dublin. CA. I have more than 20 friends here at THD ( My Bridge and Mahjong buddies) but I will only be able to invite only 9 of them. It will not be an easy task, but I will manage.

I am indeed very happy of the on-scheduled preparation for my coming BD, but the following story from my FaceBook page the other day, made me shed a tear or two. The story touches my heart and I am still crying reposting this article.

Here's the story for our younger generation to remember. Please call/email or preferably visit the Elderly(Your Parents/Grandparents) once in while in spite of your busy lives.

Here's the story:

"Isabel FernΓ‘ndez had reached 85 years of age with the peace of mind of having lived a full life. Widowed for more than two decades, she had raised her four children, but over time, family ties began to fray.
Her children, now adults, had started families of their own, absorbed in their busy lives, and visits to their mother had become increasingly sporadic.
As the years passed, Isabel took refuge in memories and in her spacious house, a beautiful property on the outskirts of Madrid. There she spent her days among books, plants, and the occasional call from her children, who were almost always too busy to visit her.
Her 85th birthday was approaching, an occasion that Isabel was especially looking forward to. She thought that maybe this time her children would come to celebrate with her, just like they did when they were little.
She had organized a small party at her house, bought a cake, and prepared several traditional dishes that she knew her children loved. She didn't need a big celebration, she just wanted the company of her family. She had sent invitations to each of her children, hoping they would understand how important that day was to her.
On Her Birthday.

The day arrived, and with it, silence. The table was set, the candles lit, but the chairs remained empty. Isabel waited patiently, looking at the clock every now and then, convinced that one of her children would appear.
However, the afternoon passed, and night fell without anyone passing through the door. Not a call, not a message. Isabel sat alone at the table, contemplating the untouched cake and the dishes she had prepared with so much love.
With a sadness that she could not hide, she blew out the candles on her own and, without saying a word, put away everything she had prepared. That night, as she tried to fall asleep, the pain in her heart was palpable.
It wasn't just the loneliness, but the fact that those to whom she had dedicated her entire life couldn't find a moment for her.
The next morning, she woke up with a different feeling. She decided that she wouldn't wait any longer. She had something to do, and she knew that, although her children did not value her in life, she would leave them a lesson that they would never forget.
The unexpected change.
A few months later, Isabel passed away peacefully in her bed. Her departure did not surprise anyone, since her advanced age already foreshadowed a near end. However, what did surprise everyone was the will she left behind.
Her children, who for years had been distant and busy with their own lives, gathered in the family lawyer's office, waiting to hear what many took for granted: that their mother's fortune would be divided equally between them.
At the front of the room, the lawyer, a middle-aged man named JuliΓ‘n GarcΓa, with a serious face, began to read the will. Silence took over the place when, one by one, Isabel's children listened to their mother's words, but what they heard was not what they expected.
"My dear children," the lawyer began, reading Isabel's words, "I have spent my last years hoping to see in you the love and unity that we once shared.
I understand that life has taken you on different paths, but I cannot ignore the pain I have felt in the moments when I have needed you most and you were not there. On my last birthday, when I sat alone waiting for you, I understood that time is not something that can be recovered."
Her children's faces began to show signs of discomfort. Each of them remembered that day with some shame, but none of them had thought that their mother would take that incident so seriously.
The lawyer continued reading: "I always wanted the best for you, but I have also learned that the true value of a family is not in material goods, but in love and time shared. Therefore, I have decided that my house, the one in which you grew up and that I know you value so much, will not be divided among you. Instead, I have left instructions that it be donated to an organization that cares for lonely elderly people, so that there they can find the comfort and affection that I do not. received in my last years."
Isabel's children were speechless. The house was the most valuable asset their mother owned, and neither of them had imagined that their mother would use it for a charitable cause. They felt a mixture of disbelief and regret, but that was not all.
"As for my money," the lawyer continued, "I have decided that part of it will go towards the education of my grandchildren, so that they can have opportunities and learn what really matters in life. The rest will be donated to various causes charitable, those that take care of those most in need, something that has worried me deeply in my last years."
The final blow was forceful. Not only had they lost the house, but most of the money wasn't going to go to them either. His mother's will was loaded with a profound lesson: true legacy is not measured in assets, but in the acts of love and compassion that are passed on to others.
The weight of decisions.
After the reading of the will, the four brothers looked at each other in silence, unable to process what they had just heard. They had spent their entire lives assuming that their mother would always be there, not realizing what they had lost in the process. Their mother had not only left them a void in material terms, but a lesson that now resonated painfully with each of them.
The following months were marked by regret. One by one, the brothers began to realize the value of the small moments they had missed, the conversations they never had, and the hugs they didn't give. Isabel's legacy was not in her house or her money, but in the profound teaching that family love cannot be bought or postponed.
The home that was once theirs now housed other elderly people who, like Isabel, had spent their last days in solitude. Every time they passed by the house, Isabel's children remembered the day they did not attend her birthday and how that absence had cost them more than they could have ever imagined.
In that final act of generosity, Isabel had left an indelible mark on her children, a lesson that, although painful, taught them the value of time, love and the presence that they had forgotten to offer".

The Pasta e Fagioli Soup and the Oktoberfest Celebration

My lunch yesterday was half-Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich, a bowl of Pasta e Fagioli soup, water melon and coke ( photo below). It was a yummy lunch and very filling with the hearty Italian Fagioli Soup. I was curious about the soup and its difference with minestrone soup so I did my search and here's what I learned.

Pasta fagioli and minestrone are both Italian soups with similar flavors that make use of whatever vegetables you have on hand. The main difference is the beans in the pasta fagioli that result in a thicker soup than minestrone, which is traditionally very brothy.
In Italian, “Pasta e Fagioli” translates to “pasta and beans”. This makes a whole lot of sense considering this soup is chock-full of pasta and beans! It is also loaded with aromatic veggies and lean ground beef, making it a whole meal in a bowl. Think of Pasta e Fagioli as an Italian spin on chili!
So now that you know what Pasta e Fagioli soup is all about, let us talk about The Newton's Oktoberfest Happy Hour and Dinner yesterday.  The Cocktail Hour was held outdoors with temperature in the low 90's, but the shade from the trees and outdoor umbrellas provided relief from the unusual heat wave that has struck Northern California this week.  There was German Polka Music for everyone to enjoy. Some of the music pieces played we can sing along.
I took some photos during the Happy Hour Celebration as follows:

The authentic German Dinner Menu was delicious. I enjoyed specifically the German PotatoπŸ’š salad and the German Chocolate Cake.
German chocolate cake uses a particular kind of baking chocolate as its base, one which has a milder, sweeter profile thanks in part to lecithin, a fatty substance derived from egg yolks. In contrast, classic chocolate cake recipes often use cocoa powder or darker chocolate for a richer, more intense flavor.
πŸ’šWhat Is German Potato Salad? Unlike mayonnaise-based American potato salads, German potato salad is tossed in a vinegar-based dressing made with bacon drippings. It is usually served warm instead of cold, but some people prefer to serve it at room temperature.
I also enjoyed the German Goulash Soup and of course the Beer:
Gute Nacht to All!

Rapid Turnover of THD Employees

Teresa Nudo- our recent Host and Chaperon during our Lunch Excursion at the SalesForce Rooftop Garden Park in San Francisco

Let me start this posting by stating that I am very happy here at THD.  However, a recent event  affected the spirit and lower the morale of several residents including myself.  It was the unexpected and sudden departure of Teresa Nudo- Activity Coordinator.  Rumor has circulated that she was fired and did not leave voluntarily. If this is true, something is rotten in Denmark!  (THD Management).

I know it is none of my business of what is going on between THD-Management and its employees. But unexpected events of employees disappearing without explanation deserves a comment from me as a blogger.  Other residents probably can not care less, but after a while some of us residents developed a bond  (friendship) with the THD employees that help promote the enhancement of our well-being as well as a sense of belonging in our aging years at THD.

I believe Teresa was doing an excellent job as Activity Coordinator and was well like by majority of residents because of her empathy for senior citizen issues.  Personally, I believe Teresa was doing an excellent job in the Activity Department. Her most recent hosting job was to chaperon us to the lunch excursions at the Rooftop Park in the SalesForce Tower in San Francisco.

Previously she worked as Resident Liaison and assisted Jenny Shively in the Marketing/Leasing Department.   We will miss you Teresa, Your empathy and kindness to the senior residents here at THD we will always remember.  Good Luck in your future endeavor.

Here's an excerpt from my previous posting about THD.

" Note that THD has been rated as a 5 Star Active Senior Living Community in the SFO East Bay. However,  Criticisms has touched on areas like parking availability and the handling of emergency situations ( no generator during power outage), suggesting a need for better communication and preemptive measures.  In addition, the rapid turnover of employees in the Activity Department also generated some negatives comments from a number of Residents".

Another recent THD employee turnover was the sudden disappearance of our recent Sous Chef, Alberto Alvarez in the Newton's Kitchen.  I have talked to him when he joined the Kitchen staff just recently.  His several years of experience as Cook for a French Restaurant in San Francisco impressed me. During his few weeks of employment here, I noticed there were some creative changes in the Dinner and Dessert Menu, that a lot of residents like.  I heard Alberto quit on his own volition after some major disagreements with Agustin. If this is true, I would not be surprised for as the saying goes:

TOO MANY COOKS IN THE KITCHEN SPOILS THE BROTH

I hope our Dinner Menu and Lunches be more creative and varied. Variety is the Spice of Life. I am looking forward for another Filipino Dinner this month to celebrate Filipino-American History Month.      Thank You, Agustin and the Kitchen Crew!

Prediction for Future THD Employee Turnovers: My guess  is there will be one or two more employee turn over before the end of the year by either voluntary retirement or change for a better positions both financially and a working environment.
Have a Great Day Every One!
