Coffee: Drink of the Gods? Prevents Type 2 Diabetes?

I love coffee ( freshly brewed from newly ground beans-baracco beans from Batangas, Philippines). I will not be able to start my day without a cup. I am probably one of the millions of Americans, who start their day with a cup coffee. However, I know of a lot of families who are not coffee drinkers.

The video below summarizes what you have to know about coffee in four minutes. This is followed by an article discussing the connection between Type 2 diabetes and coffee consumption daily.

Before I saw the above video, I thought the US was the number #1 ( or at least in the top 10 countries of the world) as far as coffee consumption. But I was wrong as shown in the rankings as follows:

Rank Annual Capita Consumption (ACC)

1 Finland 12.0 kg
2 Norway 9.9 kg
3 Iceland 9.0 kg (2006 data)
4 Denmark 8.7 kg
5 Netherlands 8.4 kg
6 Sweden 8.2 kg
7 Switzerland 7.9 kg
8 Belgium 6.8 kg
9 Luxembourg 6.8 kg
10 Aruba 6.8 kg

The US is not even in the top 25( ranked #27) with annual capita consumption (ACC) of 4.2kg. The Philippines is ranked #93 with 0.7 kg ACC. Rank Numbers 132 to 146 had 0.1kg ACC includes India, Egypt, Iran, Fiji and several African countries. Note that the top five countries are Scandinavian countries where the winters are harsh and cold. The only tropical country in the top ten is Aruba(Dutch).

Coffee has diabetes connection?
Could coffee slow the epidemic of type 2 diabetes, which disrupts sugar metabolism, which raises blood sugar that harms small blood vessels in the kidney, eye and heart?

A 2006 study of 88,259 American women showed that drinking at least four cups of coffee reduced the diabetes rate to 53 percent of the rate among non-drinkers. Although both coffee and decaf (but not tea), were beneficial, diabetes prevention was most closely linked to coffee intake rather than caffeine intake.

According to a meta-analysis based on more than 450,000 people from Asia, North American and Europe, “Every additional cup of coffee consumed in a day was associated with a 7 percent reduction in the excess risk of diabetes type 2. Drinking three to four cups of coffee per day was associated with an approximate 25 percent lower risk of diabetes.”

If coffee reduces diabetes, could it deter cancers associated with diabetes? A 2007 exploration of the soaring rate of cancer after World War II in Japan linked coffee to reductions in liver and pancreatic cancer in men, and liver, colon and endometrial cancer in women. The authors speculated that coffee could reduce resistance to insulin, “and may thereby reduce the risk of diabetes-related cancers such as colon, liver, pancreas and endometrium.”

So, drink and enjoy your cup(s)of coffee everyday. Add a shot of amaretto liquor and you will have a heavenly drink. Wine maybe the "drink of the Gods" to most people, but Amaretto coffee is my drink of the Gods. Greetings from the Grand Pa Blogger!
